Interpreting the Map

The map shows percent change in total annual precipitation for a future 30-year period compared to the 1980-2009 average. Change in total annual precipitation is an indicator of the overall change in the amount of water available for human uses and ecosystems.

Green shaded areas are an increase in total precipitation and brown areas are a decrease. Values shown are the median of multiple climate model projections. Generally, total annual precipitation is expected to slightly increase across the state, excluding northern Olympic Peninsula and some locations in the Cascades Mountains. Larger percentage increases in eastern Washington are because historical precipitation is lower than in western Washington.
